Cultural Center

Site: Kiel Harbor

Building Area: 7200 m2

Kiel is the capital of it's state and with around 250,000 inhabitants the largest german city on the Baltic Sea. Once a year the international sailing tournament “Kieler Woche” attracts around three million guests from all over the world. After the industry has decreased from the port of Kiel, a new residential and commercial area is now being built.

Looking for visionary images as symbols for the city, a new cultural landmark would also set a future-oriented sign.

The goal of the new building is to create a center of attraction in the city and also to make the surrounding areas on the east side of Kiel more attractive. With a mix of different uses, a concept is created that does not yet exist in Kiel. A museum, a restaurant, other public rooms and apartments are planned. Platforms provide views over the water and the harbour area and allow to feel the atmosphere of the port city.

The “Museum of Sailing” adds to the variety of museums in Kiel, while at the same time the restaurant and other public spaces will be an attraction for residents and visitors. In addition to integrated areas for joint events, for learning or making music, performances can also take place in the presentation room.

The new building stands for new beginnings and modernity, attracts people and new ideas, opens up visions and creates a cultural landmark.
